On 4 April, Andriy Kovalenko, a UUPN member and the Chevening scholar’2005, hosted his autograph-session to present his latest novel The Spider’s City [“̳ñòî ïàâóêà” ], 2009. The happening took place at the 11th MEDVIN Book Fair, one of Ukraine’s biggest literature attractions.
“This book represents the Other Literature, a series launched by Serhiy Pantiuk’s Publishing House,” – says Andriy. – “Today, an on-line library of the Other Literature contains almost two dozens of modern Ukrainian writers.” Being one of them, Andriy confesses that he does not work on his poetry and prose for making money. His writing is rather how his inner message can be delivered he believes.
When asked whether a British period of his life had any impact on his Spider’s City novel, Andriy radiates his happiness: “That was a direct affect since it was in Nottingham, UK to where I arrived on the Chevening International Scholarships Program in 2005 and where the final chapters of the book were written.”
A journalist by his first Diploma [of the Kyiv State Shevchenko University, 1992], Andriy covers the pressing issues of the media industry, journalism standards and ethics in his numerous columns and stories. But his professional and scientific interests are far more diverse and overlap PR and advertising for businesses, human rights protection, judicial reform, media legislation etc. In 2003-2005 he was a member of the inter-agencies working group based at the Supreme Court of Ukraine to elaborate and implement the national juvenile justice system concept. Andriy took part in the "Joint East West Research on Trafficking in Children for Sexual Purposes in Europe: the Sending Countries" (ECPAT Europe Law Enforcement Group, Amsterdam. – 2004)". He is also a co-author of the Guidelines for a Young Citizen (K.—2003).
“I was very much privileged to get my Chevening internship in UK and benefited a lot from my Course at the Law Faculty of the University of Nottingham,” says Andriy. The Faculty, located in the centre of the University Park, a beautifully landscaped 330-acre parkland campus, is consistently ranked amongst the leading law schools in the UK and it is a world-ranked centre for legal research and teaching. In 2008, too, it achieved an excellent outcome in the Research Assessment Exercise, being ranked 4th equal among UK Law Schools.
“In Nottingham, I deepened my understanding of how a mechanism of human rights protection works in practice and the way the UK adopts and approximates the international legal standards to its national needs,” – says Andriy. – “Secondly, I benefited very much from a special module on the criminal justice issues as referred to the juvenile justice and children’s rights protection. On coming back home, I used my new knowledge and views while working on the Educating Children’s Rights in Ukraine and the Implementation of Juvenile Justice System in Ukraine, both the Big Matra’s projects,” continues Andriy.
Currently, Andriy is a private entrepreneur and he has also submitted his thesis Communicative Tools in Political Public Relations in Ukraine to obtain his Candidate of Philological Science Degree at the Kyiv State Shevchenko University.
